Understanding Navratri and Dussehra
Before we dive into the details of the event, let’s explore the essence of the festivals we are celebrating:
Navratri
- Navratri means “nine nights,” and it is one of India’s most widely celebrated festivals. It is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine forms, each representing different aspects of feminine power (Shakti).
- The festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil, a theme that is seen throughout Indian mythology. For nine days, devotees worship the goddess with fasting, prayers, and vibrant dances like Garba and Dandiya.
Dussehra
- The final day of Navratri culminates in Dussehra, marking the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. This event symbolizes the triumph of righteousness (dharma) over wrongdoings (adharma). It is celebrated with plays, effigies of Ravana being burnt, and grand parades.
At RAAS GARBA, we combine both these festivities to create an event that celebrates divine energy, triumph, and community spirit.
Garba and Dandiya – A Cultural Experience Like No Other
The highlight of RAAS GARBA is the Garba and Dandiya Raas, traditional dances rooted in the state of Gujarat but loved by people across India and the world.
Garba
- Garba is a spiritual dance performed in a circular formation around an earthen pot symbolizing the goddess. The circular movement signifies the cycle of life—birth, life, death, and rebirth. Each dancer performs rhythmic steps, and the group moves in unison, creating a mesmerizing, continuous flow of energy.
- Traditionally performed at night, Garba is a dance of devotion—an offering to the goddess, as well as a celebration of the power of womanhood.
Dandiya Raas
- Dandiya is an energetic dance performed with pairs of decorated sticks. It simulates the mock battle between Goddess Durga and the evil demon Mahishasura. Dandiya is fast-paced, dynamic, and full of life, with dancers exchanging rhythmic stick movements with their partners in sync with the music.
- The colorful sticks, vibrant costumes, and lively music create a visual and sensory spectacle that embodies the festive spirit of Navratri.
At RAAS GARBA, you’ll have the chance to participate in both Garba and Dandiya. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a first-timer, our dance leaders will guide you through the steps, ensuring everyone can join the fun.

Hi. I am a Civil Servant from India and I have just reached Tokyo 5 days ago as a govt. scholar in National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies for Masters in Public Policy. I am from Nagpur, Maharashtra and I have been an avid garba enthusiast from my childhood. I love Navratri and everything about it. In my university here we have students from more than 50 countries in various courses. I would like to really bring my fellow course mates here and showcase our vibrant culture to them. Please let me know how many students I can invite for Raas Garba event. It would be a very unique experience for all of us. Looking forward for your response.
