Mount Shirane Reopens Yugama Crater Viewing Area After Eight Years
After approximately eight years of restrictions, visitors can once again enjoy views of Yugama Crater Lake at Mount Kusatsu-Shirane in Gunma Prefecture. The designated viewing area reopened on October 13, 2026, offering tourists an opportunity to see the volcano’s striking emerald-green crater lake.
The reopening follows the lowering of the volcanic alert level from Level 2 to Level 1 in May 2026. Authorities have introduced safety measures and designated access areas to allow visitors to experience this popular natural attraction while maintaining volcanic safety precautions.

The current reopening period is scheduled to continue until November 8, 2026, subject to changes in volcanic conditions and official instructions.
