Dates are estimates. “Typical” is the usual timing in past years; “forecast” is this year's expected timing. Leaf colours depend on the weather, so the real timing can be a week or two earlier or later. Check local conditions before you travel.

When to go行く時期

Leaves turn first in the north and in the mountains, and reach the big cities last. Each bar runs from the earliest to the latest best-viewing date in that region.

About the colours

Why the leaves change

As days shorten and nights cool, trees stop making green chlorophyll. The yellow and orange pigments that were always in the leaf show through, and some trees make red pigments too. Sunny days and cold, dry nights give the brightest reds.

Trees to look for注目の木々

Japanese maples (momiji and kaede) turn red, ginkgo trees turn bright yellow, and zelkova and beech turn gold and bronze. Parks and temple gardens often plant several kinds together for a mix of colours.

Reading the forecast

“Peak colour” (見頃, migoro) is when most leaves have turned but few have fallen. Aim for the middle of the best-viewing window, and go to the mountains earlier than the cities.「見頃」とは、葉の多くが色づき、まだあまり散っていない時期のことです。
