Mount Fuji sees its first snow of the season富士山に今シーズン初の雪

Mount Fuji has its first snowcap of the season. The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed it on Friday, 30 October 2026.

This year's first snowcap came 28 days later than average and seven days later than last year. The agency says the two years cannot be compared directly, because it has changed how it checks for snow.

A new way of checking

Until now, staff at the Kofu Local Meteorological Office looked at the mountain to see whether it had snow. This season the agency is using radar, weather data and the Himawari satellite instead. The aim is more accuracy and less work for staff.

Radar showed at least 1 centimetre of snow near the summit at 8 a.m. on Friday. The temperature at the 3,776-metre summit was minus 6.3°C at that time.

Fujiyoshida also confirmed it

The city of Fujiyoshida, at the foot of the mountain, announced the first snowcap the same day. Its staff confirmed it by sight. The city has made this announcement since 2006, in case rain or fog stops the Kofu office from seeing the summit.

富士山に今シーズン初めての冠雪が確認されました。気象庁が2026年10月30日（金）に発表しました。

今年の初冠雪は、平年より28日遅く、昨年より7日遅くなりました。ただし気象庁は、観測の方法を変えたため、昨年と単純に比べることはできないとしています。

新しい確認の方法

これまでは、甲府地方気象台の職員が山を目で見て、雪があるかどうかを確認していました。今シーズンからは、レーダーや気象データ、ひまわり気象衛星を使う方法に切り替えました。正確さを高め、職員の負担を減らすのが目的です。

金曜日の午前8時のレーダーデータでは、山頂付近に少なくとも1センチメートルの雪がありました。そのときの山頂（標高3,776メートル）の気温はマイナス6.3度でした。

富士吉田市も確認

富士山のふもとにある富士吉田市も、同じ日に初冠雪を発表しました。市の職員が目で確認したものです。富士吉田市は2006年から、雨や霧で甲府の気象台から山が見えない場合に備えて、この発表を続けています。
